Chapter Nine
Two weeks went by without incident. Amelia remained in bed while Patrick sat with her. He read to her from his favorite books, played checkers with her, let her nap, and made her meals. All without complaint. The only time they'd been separated was when he went to listen to Reverend Tate's sermon in the middle of the week. He came back energized and talked nonstop about the Lord, His Word, and prayer.
Patrick's prayer from the first night together stayed close to Amelia's heart. He thought she was asleep, but she heard every word and treasured them. This man couldn't be more different than Harry in looks and personality.
Not that Harry was a bad husband. On the contrary. He loved Amelia but showed it in different ways. While Patrick spoke openly about his faith, Harry was content to pray before meals and silently read a chapter in the Bible at night. Patrick treated her with care, as if she were a porcelain doll. Harry expected her to be strong. And she was. Those few moments when he held her while she wept were unusual for Harry. She longed for more of them. They seldom came. Her love for Harry stemmed from friendship turned into attraction. While her feelings for Patrick stemmed from attraction turning into something more than friendship.
"What's got you looking so intense?"
Amelia glanced up from the book in her hands, the words not registering in her brain. "Nothing."
Concern drew Patrick closer. He sat on the edge of the bed and cradled her hand in his. "Are you hurting? Back pain? Birthing pain?"
"No, no pain at all. I'm beginning to think Doc Frank was mistaken."
"What do you mean?" Patrick inclined his head to the side.
"I feel absolutely fine. I haven't had any pain since the day we married. Perhaps we can go see him and have him examine me again." Hope stirred in Amelia. If she felt better, surely the doctor would let her get back to work.
Patrick pretended to cough, trying to cover the smile lifting the sides of his mouth. "Do you think that could be due to the rest you're allowing your body to get?"
Amelia narrowed her eyes at him. "Why would that be?"
"Because you're not working as much, causing strain on your body or on the baby. The pains have subsided because you're relaxing." Patrick grabbed the brush off the dresser. "I know this is hard for you, but hang in there. You're almost finished."
Amelia scooted forward on the bed, as was her custom when Patrick brushed her hair. She didn't need him to do it, but he said he enjoyed it. Truth be told, she did, as well. Patrick took his spot behind her then ran the brush through her long hair.
"I'm bored, Patrick. There's a month until Christmas and I've done nothing."
"That's not true. You've been making more quilts. I've seen the one you're working on for the baby." He paused and squeezed her shoulder. "It's nice."
"Nice?" Amelia raised her eyebrows, even though he couldn't see her.
